How to Clean Your LCD TV screen

How to Clean Your LCD TV screen

First we have to understand a little bit of background about LCD screens to know why we should be careful when cleaning. LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display; which has crystal molecules sandwiched under layers of polarized panels. These panels are usually made of "plastic-like" polymer materials, and like any plastics they can be easily scratched or gouged, even by just your fingernails! That's why cleaning LCDs requires special care while cleaning compared to the old glass CRT monitors!

* What You'll Need

- rubbing alcohol (aka isopropyl alcohol)

- distilled water (not tap water!)

- A soft cloth (lint-free)

* Steps

1. Dilute the rubbing alcohol into a mix with about 50% alcohol and the rest distilled water.

2. Pour this solution into a spray bottle. Old Windex bottles are good as they spray in a mist pattern with just the right amount to get good coverage on your screen. The spray bottles that squirt a single stream tend to drip solution all over the place.

3. Spray the mix onto a soft lint-free cloth. Old t-shirts and microfiber car wash cloths are both good choices. Large cloths are better since it helps to reduce the risk of leaving streaks on the screen from too much pressure.

4. Gently wipe the cloth on the screen in a circular consistent motion. Apply even pressure to the cloth and be careful not to push too hard, or scrape the screen with your fingernails!

* Suggestions

- Costly products that you buy at the "computer screen cleaning" aisle of your local computer store contain the same basic ingredients of alcohol and water! Some even contain other harmful chemicals such as ethylene glycol, which may be OK on older glass CRT monitors, but should NOT be used on LCD screens! Some of the extra chemicals can also be harmful to the environment and to your health.

- Be sure to use Mineral water! Not tap water; you don't want hard mineral spots on your screen.

- Don't use tissue paper; they will leave lint and spots of paper stuck to your monitor. Also they're too thin, risking damage from your fingernails poking through.

- Don't apply too much solution. If you do, just wipe it off with the cloth and use less.

- You can also use lint-free lens wipes from photography stores, but they're thinner so be careful about your fingernails poking through.

- For a cheap ready-made solution from the store, you can also use CD/DVD cleaner, It's already designed to be plastic-safe, and is a simple solution of about 50% isopropyl alcohol.

* Some Precautions

- Don't use Windex or other glass cleaners! These contain ammonia, which is OK for glass, but WILL hurt your LCD screen!

- Try not to use the really cheap paper towels, like the tough brown ones in public washrooms. They can scratch your screen.

- Be sure to shut down your computer and your monitor, then unplug from the wall. This reduces the risk of electric damage in case you spill some of the solution on components.

- Don't drink isopropyl alcohol! It's toxic!

- If you aren't sure, you can test a small corner of the screen first.

Follow the steps and suggestions above, and your trusty LCD monitor should give you years of clean, clear, trouble-free service.

Dehumidifier Shopping Basics - Take Note of Your Dehumidifier Noise Level

Dehumidifier Shopping Basics - Take Note of Your Dehumidifier Noise Level

A dehumidifier is a device that is used to regulate the humidity in an enclosed area. It removes the excess moisture in the air to prevent common household issues such as wall stains, wallpaper peeling and water buildup. You use the dehumidifier mostly during the winter season when insulation systems are the only ways of providing proper ventilation in a room.

Dehumidifier Shopping Basics - Take Note of Your Dehumidifier Noise Level

For many people, getting a good dehumidifier is a must. Shopping for one, however, requires careful thought. To make the right buying decision, you want to consider factors such as the dehumidifier noise level, the humidstat, and filter efficiency.

Quiet appliance

The dehumidifier noise level is an important factor that you need to remember when purchasing an appliance. You don't want to be distracted by the loud background noise of your dehumidifier when you're sleeping or simply trying to enjoy a good book. Pesky buzzing noise can come from a dehumidifier that is larger for the room so you want to make sure that you opt for a model that matches the size of your house or room interiors. Naturally, if your room is small, you want to opt for a smaller model. Portable dehumidifier noise level can also be annoying so you want to go for those that are electrically powered. While these models still emit a soft buzzing sound, they are not as loud as the portable varieties.

Proper use

One point to remember when using a dehumidifier is that you shouldn't dehumidify to below 35%. Really low humidity in the room can cause your throat and nose to itch, your lips to chap and your furniture to get damaged. Electrical sparks and static can also come up as a result of low humidity. It's also important to clean your dehumidifier after the cold season is up and particularly when you wouldn't use it for a long time.

Greenhouse Heat Controller (Part 1)

Greenhouse Heat Controller (Part 1) Tube. Duration : 14.50 Mins.

I am installing a greenhouse heat controller. It consists of a 24 volt transformer, contactor and thermostat. The thermostats that come on most electric space heaters just dont work very well. This project has been on the agenda for a few years now. I am finally getting it all together. This is the same setup I have used to control my dehumidifier for many years now. I also included a few random video clips of the cats and the Generac 14KW generator running it's weekly excercise cycle.

How to Stop Sweating Pipes in the Basement

How to Stop Sweating Pipes in the Basement

Do you have puddles of water on your basement floor due to sweating pipes? If you are inconvenienced (to say the least) by this situation, take heart because you are not alone with this problem. Sweating pipes in the basement is a very common predicament experienced by most homeowners.

How to Stop Sweating Pipes in the Basement

How to Stop Sweating Pipes in the Basement

The truth is, pipe sweating is just an indication of extreme dampness or humidity in your basement. Even when there are no leaks in your basement, large amounts of water vapor can enter it, and, eager to become water again, latches on to any cold surface around. You guessed it right...water pipes are the easiest targets. Your cold water pipes need to "sweat out" or condense the moisture out of your damp basement.

But enough of the lecture, and on with the solutions. What steps can you take to stop sweating pipes in the basement? Here are five common solutions to your problem:

1. Use a dehumidifier. Continuously running a dehumidifier in your basement will can help a lot in lowering the humidity of your basement. The less humid your basement, the less likely your pipes will sweat. Removing the access dampness in your basement can also get rid of the unhealthy air, allowing you and your family to breathe in better air.

2. Use foam insulation. By wrapping your cold pipes, you get right to heart of the matter - not let moisture reach them in the first place! Home improvement stores carry foam-pipe insulation that can easily slip right over your pipes. This material is available in various lengths and can be easily cut with a pair of scissors. You don't even need to wrap all fifty meters or so of pipe in your house. Just do it for those easy-to-reach pipes and you will see a significant improvement.

3. Get rid of all leaks in the basement. Like I previously mentioned, even without leaks, moisture can get in. Just imagine how the situation can worsen if you do have cracks or openings in your basement. For minor leaks, waterproofing compounds will do, while hydraulic cement is best for actively leaking areas. Make sure also that all plumbing problems within the house are taken care of. Dampness can come from both outside and inside the house.

4. Check your house's foundations and exterior walls. If you have a problem in your house's foundations on top of having cracks in your basement walls, this will compound your moisture problems. For instance, an ineffective gutter system or the lack of one, can let all the water pool at your home's foundations right outside your basement! Make sure rainwater is directed away from your house not towards it.

If the ground around is sloped towards the foundations of your house, that could be also another cause of moisture problem in your basement.

5. Apply waterproofing compound on walls and floors. To further prevent any unwanted moisture from coming inside your basement, you can use waterproofing compound on walls and floors even before any leaks are detected. Choose a high quality waterproofing that will effectively stop any water from coming in the basement, and not just one that will protect from surface moisture as a sealer does. Also, use a waterproofer that is suitable for sealing walls under water pressure.

Keep in mind that if you do just any one or two of these steps, the improvements can be felt already. Used together, the effects can be tremendous.

There are a variety of dehumidifiers for home or basement and there are also different brands. All of the manufacturers claim that ifyou purchase their device you are getting the highest rated and best dehumidifier made. Consumer Reports may even be supporting the claims of some of these manufacturers.

Some people believe that when considering buying a humidifier for your home you should just purchase the largest size that you can afford. The thinking behind this theory is that the bigger the capacity the more efficient the dehumidifier made works in removing the humidity from the air. Wanted to know what this thing does in "Dry" mode. Here's what I think. I don't think dry mode is worth having on a window a/c. If you want to dry mode, just set the fan to Low speed and set the unit to "Energy Saver". All it does is run the fan on low and turn the fan off when the compressor stops. It does still blow out ice cold air during "Dry" Mode ". It didn't lower the humidity in the room at all. Not even 1%. Any questions? leave a comment below!

Black Mold Health Effects-What Kills Mold?

Black Mold Health Effects-What Kills Mold?

Black molds and mildews are known for bringing about various health problems in human beings. Though they are essential for earth's ecosystem, they are not at all good for our health. Indoor black molds can result in serious health issues for men, women, kids and seniors. Individuals with compromised immune systems suffer a lot when exposed to black molds.

Black Mold Health Effects-What Kills Mold?

Black Mold Health Effects:

Mold spores are released into the air. Hyphal fragments become airborne when stirred by any of the external forces. These airborne particles are so small in size that human eyes cannot see them. When individuals inhale moldy air, these particles enter into the system and easily make their way to lungs and other respiratory organs.

Black mold health effects may turn up to be veryserious. Initially it looks like common allergic reactions to cold or dust. But ignoring the early symptoms can be dangerous.

Some of the symptoms of mold and mildew allergy are stuffy and runny noses, watery eyes, difficulty breathing, skin rashes, headache, irritation of throats and nausea. There can be other reactions of mold exposure too, it is better to consult a physician to know the exact cause of allergies.

Troubles can begin suddenly. Individuals may feel congested as soon as they enter into a mold infected room, basement OR come into direct contact with any moldy piece of fabrics, curtains, leather, carpets, wallpapers and other similar household materials.

Should such symptoms occur, be careful. Mold infection is accompanied by a musty odor. Thisodor is the clue; it helps individuals identify the exact location of contamination. Humid places and the locations that had water damage are preferred by molds and mildews to grow in. Mold removal is the only way to get rid of such sticky molds.

Here is a list of black mold health effects:

Redness, irritation of eyes and watery eyes are known as common symptoms of mold infection. But the problem is these symptoms are also observed in cold and flu. Itchiness and redness can spread around the eyes and result in swelling of eye areas. Coughing, wheezing and sneezing also fall under common mold allergies.

If you have had no history of cold or flu in recent past, and you are suffering form these symptoms, it can be a case of mold exposure. To be confirmed, walk intoother parts of the house, get out in the garden and go on to open air. If the conditions continue to be the same, perhaps you have cold. Otherwise, the place wherein your suffering started has got molds.

Direct contact with toxic black mold and mildews often result in skin rashes. Itchiness, swelling and tenderness are the general signs of skin allergies due to mold. These are also similar like other types of allergic responses, hence, difficult to diagnose unless the victim is sure of handling any contaminated substance.

Some individuals are more responsive to the molds; however, almost everybody shows some of the above mentioned symptoms with different intensity when exposed to molds and mildews. People with asthma and compromised immune system experience really badconditions on the presence of toxic black molds and mildews.

What kills mold?

Mold cleaning and mold removal both are important when it comes to killing mold. Exhaust fans, air conditioning system and dehumidifier made can help you clear airborne mold particles. To clean mold infected substances, you can use mold cleaning products which are natural. Mold cleaners made of organic substances are free from side effects and quite effective too.

While cleaning molds, one should be careful enough so that cleaning-time exposure does not result into severe black mold health issues.

Do It Yourself Auto Body Repair-It's Easier Than You Think

Do It Yourself Auto Body Repair-It's Easier Than You Think

Everyone has done it. You back into a pole, rear end to stray shopping cart or drop a heavy object on the trunk lid. The result is an ugly dent or a scraped finish. Turning in small damage claims to your insurance can be costly and if you have gotten an auto body repair estimate, you know that parts and labor can be expensive to pay out of pocket. There is another option though, you can fix it yourself. That's right. Armed with a plunger, a bottle of touch up paint and a few supplies, the average do-it-yourselfer can repair small dents and scratches. Here's how.

Unsightly Dents

If your accident has not broken the finish and has damaged a larger body panel, you may be able to pull the dent out. Dump a bucket of soapy water over the dent and stick your householdplunger over the area. The water should help create a good seal and you may be able to pull the panel back into shape. The soap will allow you to slide the plunger down the panel to break the suction.

If your dent is in a small area near a crease in the vehicle, you can place a small block of wood at the tip of the dent and gently tap the wood with a mallet to force the misplaced metal back into its original shape. Tapping gently around the edges of the dent may help pop the metal back into shape. Use care not to break the chipped paint finish, exposes bare metal which will rust.

Scrapes, Scratches and Stone Chips

Most body shops will sell you a bottle of touch up paint. They will also ask you what you are repairing and offer to fix it for a large fee. Kindlydecline, and request just a bottle of touch up paint. They will need access to you vehicle to get the manufacturer's paint code. This is most often found in the glove box or the door jam. If your vehicle has been painted a different hue than its original paint color, the auto body technician can use an educated guess to mix your paint to match the rest of the finish closely.

You will need a fine grit sand paper, a bucket of soapy water, some wax and buffing cloths in addition to your bottle of paint. Wash the scraped area well with soapy water, paying special attention to any bugs or tar in the area. Wet your fine grit sand paper and carefully sand the edges of the scrape or stone chips, making sure to keep your sand paper wet. Dry the area well and leave it sit for at leastten minutes to make sure it dries completely. Then, shake the bottle of touch up paint for at least two minutes. Brush on a light coat of paint over the damaged area. You can always apply a second coat after the first coat dries. Allow the paint to cure overnight then use a rubbing compound followed by a coat of wax to protect your finish

Paint repairs do the best when done on a sunny day with low humidity. If this is not possible in your area, perform the repairs inside a heated building with a dehumidifier made running. You can also use heat lamps or a hair dryer on its lowest setting to help cure the paint.

With a few tools and a little know-how, you can save yourself some money by repairing small damages yourself.
